Discovery Express aims to make science fun and intriguing for kids in pre-school through sixth grade, while providing a sound foundation of scientific concepts and habits, such as following directions, measuring, observing, and record-keeping.
We provide after-school and summer programs in the greater Fargo-Moorhead-West Fargo area, as well as teaching materials, books and games for teachers, parents and children. In addition, we provide professional development for teachers of our programs, which may be taken for graduate credit.

Founder and CEO

Dr. E (a.k.a. Dr. Erin Nyren) is a business owner and scientist who grew up exploring her environment in rural North Dakota, which nurtured her fascination with science. She conducted her first research project when she was 12 years old for her 7th grade science fair project and since then has been devoted to getting kids to enjoy and get excited about science. She received her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from North Dakota State University in 2013, where she researched new detection methods for diseases and drug contamination and mentored several high school, undergraduate, and graduate students. She is currently the CEO of Discovery Express Kids, and spends her day writing new science lessons, developing new educational products, and teaching after school STEM workshops for elementary and preschools in Fargo-Moorhead and surrounding communities.
Contributing Authors
Maddie Van Beek is originally from Perham, MN. She and her husband live in a house in North Fargo with our "zoo"; I have a Boxer/Pitbull named Happy, a Boxer Mix named Hazel, a fluffy black cat named Kilala, and three rats named Ophelia, Agnes, and Zoey.
She came to Fargo to attend NDSU and am currently student teaching at Liberty Middle School and Sheyenne High School. Before student teaching, Maddie worked as an AVID tutor for West Fargo Public Schools for two years. She runs cross country and track for NDSU and will finish her final season as a Bison athlete this spring. Her specialty is the steeplechase. Maddie is majoring in English and English Education. She is excited to ultimately become a middle school or high school teacher; one of her main goals in the classroom is to get students involved in and excited about their own learning process. |
Sidney Kaufman is from Fargo, ND and is currently a freshman at NDSU. She lives at home, which also can be considered a "zoo" with two cats and two dogs.
She is majoring in Biological Sciences with an emphasis in Zoology, and plans to graduate in 2020. Sidney has always been interested in the sciences, and is excited to help children cultivate this appreciation. Before NDSU, Sidney graduated from Sheyenne High School. She competed in the academic olympics and represented her school in Student Congress After NDSU, Sidney hopes to work as an animal behavioralist; studying habits and patterns in order to find the best way to raise or care for an animal. |
